Take A Break

A lightweight Windows desktop timer that reminds users to rest at configurable intervals and helps track completed breaks.

Project overview

About this project

TakeABreak is a Windows desktop application designed to encourage healthier work habits by prompting users to take regular breaks from their screen. It runs quietly in the system tray and can start minimized, letting users keep the reminder active without cluttering their workspace.

Users choose how often they want to be reminded (90 minutes by default), then start or stop the timer from a compact interface. When an interval ends, the app displays a focused “time to take a break” prompt. The user can confirm that the break was taken, which restarts the configured interval and optionally increments the daily break counter, or postpone the reminder for five more minutes. Settings are saved locally in a JSON configuration file and include the break interval, start-minimized behavior, and whether completed breaks should be counted.

Main capabilities

  • Configurable break-reminder intervals
  • System-tray operation with Show, Hide, and Exit controls
  • Start-minimized support
  • Break confirmation or five-minute postponement
  • Optional daily completed-break counter
  • Local, persistent settings

Background

Built for a real need: TakeABreak was created after a friend asked for a lightweight reminder to take regular rests while working and spending long hours at the computer.
